At the frontlines of C&W Services, extraordinary actions often happen during otherwise ordinary moments. Vigilance can turn routine tasks into heroic acts. January 4, 2025, seemed like any other day when Lead Janitor Juan Zacarias Pascual began his 10 PM to 6:30 AM shift at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Yet, his sharp attention to detail made all the difference.
Alert Eyes in the Quiet Hours
While performing his regular duties in the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT), Juan noticed something awry: an unauthorized individual had occupied the secured terminal area for days. While others might have dismissed—or missed—the observation, Juan recognized the risk.
Without hesitation, he trusted his instincts and reported his findings to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Police Officers. His vigilance paid off. Their investigation revealed that an unauthorized person had been living in the terminal’s sterile area, creating a serious security concern. Juan’s quick action prompted law enforcement to remove the individual and secure the area.
Excellence Recognized
Juan’s vigilance caught the attention of airport authorities, including the TSA and LAWA’s Vulnerability Assessment and Analysis Unit (VAAU), leading to a well-deserved recognition.
During an early morning ceremony on January 22, 2025, a distinguished group of airport officials and C&W Services leaders gathered at TBIT to honor him. The celebration included Charlotte Jensen, Meredith Meyer, Jonathan Muralles, Jerson Ramirez, and Francisco Gomez. Our leadership team brought breakfast to share with the TSA and Airport Police.
Juan proudly received a Certificate of Appreciation from the TSA and an Employee Appreciation Award from C&W Services. He also received some well-deserved gifts. Juan’s story was later shared with key airport stakeholders, including the Tom Bradley International Terminal Operations Support Company (TOSC), airline partners, and LAWA.
Spotting the Unseen: The Power of Paying Attention
Juan’s actions underscore every team member’s critical role in keeping facilities secure. Operating throughout the terminal during high-traffic—and low-traffic—hours, our team members are often the first to notice small but crucial details.
By seeing something and saying something, Juan set an example for us all. At C&W Services, we foster this mindset where attentiveness, training, and a proactive approach make a real difference.
Beyond the Call of Duty
This incident highlights our core belief: excellence in facility services goes beyond cleaning and maintenance. It requires awareness, judgment, and the inclination to act.
Juan marks his first anniversary with C&W Services on February 21, 2025. His quick thinking proves that making an impact can come at any point during your career journey with us—it’s about being present, engaged, and ready to step up.
